A project long in the making, Harborton Street Housing is a new facility with a range of amenities, located near the research center's campus outside the tsunami hazard zone.

The project is a design-build effort. Mackenzie is collaborating with O'Brien-Lucas Ventures, a joint venture partnership of O'Brien and Company and Lucas Design-Build, a minority business enterprise.

DESIGN DRIVERS

This project combines a unique design-build partnership, an innovative construction process, and an efficient process to achieve a long-term vision for the Hatfield Marine Science Center.

The building is designed to take advantage of panelized modules that are prefabricated offsite by a local manufacturer. These will then be assembled onsite, supporting an efficient construction process and a sustainable approach.
The project is an important next step for the research institute, as adequate housing has been a pinch point for growth. It also relieves pressure on local housing, addressing a wider community need.
An efficient process was integral to getting the project off the ground, and the team achieved this through an initial, intense two-day session which produced a central and single concept that was carried through design to construction.
